Rethinking Homemaking: What we do here

So what they heck do we even do here? What's our goal?
If you're anything like me, maybe you grew up with a strong feminist agenda surrounding you. I know, "agenda" sounds like a strong word. Maybe "influence" is more appropriate.
When I was growing up, it wasn't uncommon for moms to still stay home with their kids until they went to school or to be "homemakers" or "housewives" or "stay at home moms." As I was growing up, this began to seem more and more ridiculous. Why would you put your own career on hold just to stay home? Didn't that seem a little sexist? Why was it the man that "got to go to work?"
Homemaking felt like a death sentence to me. The term elicited images of puffy skirts with an apron over them while you held a feather duster. Barf.
But y'all. That's not what homemaking is.
When Shawn and I bought our first house I got to start doing all these things I loved - styling furniture, picking paint colors, arranging decor. My mom helped me install landscaping in the front and I started my own herb and vegetable gardens. I got to decorate for Christmas and make my front door wreaths and all of these fun things! We also learned how to grocery shop efficiently for the two of us, how to split responsibilities, and just live our lives.
Y'all. THAT is homemaking.
Yes, seriously. Do we still have to clean stuff? Of course. Do we have to cook? I mean, yeah, if you want to eat. But those things 1) don't have to be a terrible punishment and 2) aren't the only things that go into it.
So that's what we're doing here. I'm going to help you rethink homemaking. I'm going to share how we're making our own home into the place we never want to leave. The place we want to live our lives in and raise our family in. We're going to learn what it means to be good stewards of our homes, our bodies, our families and the earth.
I hope you'll join me.
